OPENING ANALYSIS- 'CHILDREN OF MEN'

WHERE is being represented?
It is obvious from the opening sequence that the film is set in London, therefore London is being represented. The news reporter on had a strong British accent so the audience was able to realise that the scene was within England where the location of the film was set. Additionally, when the main character walks out of the cafe, it is evidently that the film is set within central London.
How is it being represented?
The opening scene highlights that the date is 2027, therefo re times have changed and technology is more advanced. In the future (2027) London has a university of energy, showing the importance of the city and represents London as a developed and modernised place. The protagonist then leaves work early, and it appears as though he gets the train home. During his time on the train, a gang of people standing on the train tracks throw rocks and fireballs at each of the train carriages as a way of protesting and showing their concern over the death of the youngest person in the world. This again contributes to the negative representation of the location and misleads the audience into thinking London is a very dangerous place.
WHO is being represented?
A hero is not fully established in the opening scene, how there is a main character who seems ambiguous. As he enters the cafe, he is surrounded my heart broken people with full attention watching the news on TV, he doesn’t show the slightest attention to his surroundings as he was only concerned with the coffee he wanted to buy. However the scene is dominated by him, therefore the audience is unsure if his character is antagonist or protagonist but it is obvious he is a very important character.
How do we know he is the hero?
When the bomb attack incident occurred, the audience would expect the “hero” to go towards the explosion however this character showed no care and worried about his own safety, doing a very selfish act therefore he doesn’t, therefore he doesn’t fit the “convention” of a hero that the audience have in mind. This ambiguous character is seen as a lazy type as he lies to his boss asking if he could do his work at home as he is affected by the death of the youngest person when he clearly this is recognisable by his body language and facial expression. He is also represented as an uncaring person when he walks past the caged immigrants. He walks without making eye contact, and when the cry of an elderly lady is heard, he paid no attention whatsoever as he walks on pretending li ke he didn’t hear anything. He is someone the audience would call an anti-hero but also an important character as the play progresses for example a typical hero would be: is a helpful, danger preventer, friendly, strong, handsome man or beautiful woman. Whereas he’s unshaven, poring alcohol in his coffee doesn’t care about his appearance and he cowardly hides himself when the bomb goes off instead of helping others.
How are women represented?
As the women can no longer reproduce they are represented as unimportant, however they are also represented as vulnerable because in the opening scene you can notice the women were arm-linked to their husbands crying silently. The women are also represented to be very emotional as we can see the women in the office crying and wiping their tears as they watch ‘Diego's devastating news on their computer. More other the women are represented as weak because majority of the people in the immigrant cage were women crying even an old women that was speaking another language, although her crying makes the audience feel for her.
How is the future represented?
The future is represented with advanced technology as it is mainly based around means of communication as there are big screens on tall building broadcasting the assassination and later on in the film as it progresses. The future is however presented in a harsh way because of the death of the youngest boy in the planet. This presents that the people in the future takes the law into their own hand as they violently beat the assassin to death and also shows that the future citizens are capable to do anything. London doesn’t seem friendly as most people are busy minding their own business or being disturbed by the death. The streets also seem unsafe mainly because of bomb explosions out of nowhere. As well as the angry mobs who must be young men as the youngest child who was 18 died, we’re throwing stones and all kinds of object at the train.
Can you notice any other social groups or places which are represented?
Apart from the concerned people in the coffee shop at the beginning of the film, there isn’t really any other social place for the audience to notice apart from the streets where everyone is too busy minding their own business. Even in the coffee shop, the characters wasn’t even socialising as they were too focused on the television although the audience could clearly hear silent crying from the women as they are pouring out their emotions over the death of Diego even during that the main character leaves cafe but the sobbing gets louder. The cafe is considered as social place because a group of people gather together to watch the news about ‘baby Diego’ apart from that the news reporter spoke of immigration and deportation which suggests that nothing happy will ever occur in the future.
How are these representations constructed?
The representations of social groups or places are constructed in a straightforward way because it shows the level of people’s socialisation in the future as these future people are too focused on the assassination; this shows that the characters get overwhelmed quickly which is acceptable for the audience to understand as this boy was the youngest boy on the planet. The use of the coffee shop deemed constructed effectively as the audience can relate to the surrounding and the atmosphere. The office is also another place where the audience sees a group of people which is similar to the action in the cafe, all the women at the desk were crying, being all emotional over the news of Diego's assassination.
Lighting
When the film starts the audience can immediately notice that florescent lighting used in the coffee shop, once the camera gets outside the audience can see there is some sort of decolouration as its looks very neutral making a typical British weather. The lighting shows that it’s futuristic because the future is meant to optimistic therefore the lighting is very neutral to portray this picture, which also re-assures the audience that the future isn’t going to be strange through the lighting, the cloud stays the same colour as it’s always been.
Camera Work:
During the opening sequence several shots were used such as: high angle, tracking shot, crane shot, established shots and panning shot. The camera works are used in very structural was as they use high angle shot when the characters are looking up to watch the news on television that way the camera is looking down at them. The tracking shot is used to follow the main character throughout the opening sequence. The establishing shot is used to give the audience a quick tour of the future, showing things like the big screen. The camera work is unconventional to major features of a fictional film the establishment shot doesn’t show a ‘big space ship’ that normally appears at the start of a fictional film. It is also unconventional as it portrays the future in a negative way which doesn't confirm the stereotypical representation of the future and also the non establishment of who the hero or antagonist is makes it unconventional to the major feature of fictional films. As the producer used a variety of shots, I don’t see anything they could have done.
Editing:
In the opening sequence there was one shot that was mainly used when the main character was walking out of the coffee shop all the way to the scene when he was about to drop some alcohol into his coffee before the explosion. The way the credits were used was effective as they used bold white text on a pitch black background as it makes it stand out. This shows the simplicity of the film. The pace of the film changes when the man was leaving the cafe it changed places for a few seconds as the camera is set in the cafe until the man leaves and by the camera keeps the man in the shot by using a tracking shot.
Sound:
The sound was created in the opening scene in a particular way because the streets didn’t sound as busy as it looked which makes it ‘non-diegetic’ (not natural) sound although it was still linked up with ‘diagetic’ (natural) sound. The music was added to news report to set the feelings and emotion that citizens was feeling. The directors made these choices for dramatic affect and to grab the viewers for example the shock of the bomb, the sadness of the death, the nervousness of the man and the curiosity of the viewers.
Mise-en-scene (everything you see in the scene):
The Mise – en – scene has been used to add to both, to make the location look as normal and natural as they can and to create a dirty area to show the lack of interest from the citizen of city in order to clean which slightly indicates the end of the world. The mise – en – scene also helps to set the location by including identifiable objects such as the red double decker buses, police officers and working class busy people in the scene. Within the opening scene there are other props put in to the scene like; rubbish bags which were thrown around, motorbike cars (leaving a thick trail of smoke behind), trains covered in graffiti and soldiers guarding with guns this shows us the violence in the world today moreover the other props indicate to us how the world is on the verge of ending.
GENRE:
The genre is portrayed brilliantly as a thriller, there is immense suspense built in the film, there’s secrecy and mysteriousness about the character and the situation of the future. There is also slight sign of documentary style of filming and the years not far off from now can intrigue the reader to look as if it could be realistic. The conventions match in some way to a conventional thriller but the director has taken out, some of the traditional parts such as the dark glasses and suspicious brief cases. And instead the director created a new era of thrillers with a climax in the opening scene. What’s unique about the opening to Children of Men is the way the director uses a sustained tracking shot which remains on the protagonist even after he leaves the shop and starts to walk down the road. the director then cuts to a panning shot which revolves around the protagonist  as he pour alcohol into his coffee, such a mundane gives the audience no time to react to the explosion which destroys the shop the protagonist has just left. With the inclusion of the bomb explosions it gives the film the title of an action thriller.
NARRATIVE:
The native structure is the opening film. It is quite obvious that the narrative structure of the ‘children of men’ has actual image but only dialogue of the news report on televisions in the cafe and the report we hear are always negative ones. The extract fulfills my expectation of what an opening scene is and should look like. The fact it doesn’t use imagery or text and only uses dialogue makes people and me see what is being heard. Although with plot of the story I would have expected ongoing action or even action straight from the beginning.

Analysis of ‘Panic Room’

Camera shots/angles and movements
The opening scene of ‘Panic Room’ is dominated by long shots showing a major city in America. The establishing long shot informs the audience of the scale and power of a modern city surrounded by skyscrapers and tall buildings.
As the movie is set in a city, they use long and wide shot which gives depth and width of the surroundings to highlight the size of the setting(city). Throughout the opening scene the camera is constantly pans around the buildings. This way it makes it more realistic like 3D motions; therefore the audience can understand the setting more.
High angle shots are used looking down onto building, also shows what kind of city it is, in this case it is a busy city as many cars are driving past. high shots are particularly used to emphasis the large scale of the building.
Sound
Throughout the opening scene, most of the sound used is non-diegetic. at first  the rhythm and slow beat is conventional and associates with thriller. The background music matches the pace of the film and shots taken. Approximately after 1 minute into the sequence, the music speeds up and becomes more upbeat giving the scene more drama and complexity. It sounds quite unusual and dramatic which made the audience become intrigued.  the end of the scene as the characters were introduced and share a little dialog the background music faded out.
Editing
A large number of cuts were used throughout the scene. Because there were a range of different camera shots. Cuts  were needed to change the scenes smoothly and show each building effectively and clearly. The lettering used in the opening has a lot of use of transitions. The lettering goes perfectly with scenery as they create it to look parallel to the buildings which makes it look like it’s part of the background. They make the shots to be quite long and drag. This way it’s like a tour of the setting.

Mise en scene
In the opening you can see yellow taxis which instantly mean its set in some place in America. As well taxis you can notice an overdose use of skyscrapers and billboards’, indicating it is a large city.

Characters
At the end of the scene the dolly shot is used to present the opening characters. The opening scene lacked characters so full attention will be on the buildings and location of the scene. It can with that short moment view of the characters, the audience lack information whether these people will have a big role in the film or not. They are not told or shown that any of these people is the leading character or a hero for that matter and because they were well dressed and spoken that suggest their upper class people.
Locations
Instantly the audience can tell the location is based in new york. This is immediately identified at the beginning of the clip when the camera shows the Hudson River and the New York sky scraper buildings. New york is known as one of the most popular and famous location to film which instantly makes it a blockbuster movie which is an instant success.
Genre
Apart from the title ‘panic room’ nothing else in the opening scene gives any idea it is a thriller, but the word ‘panic’ fit in with the thriller conventions so that gives a little idea that is a thriller. The dramatic sounds effect also helps back the title with a little idea that it is a thriller film.
Narrative/plot
The plot is unclear in the opening scene. It seems like there’s going to be a dramatic effect or irony as it is normal and peaceful in the beginning but later on drama will explode in the ‘panic room’. However the title gives the narrative away a bit, as it seems obvious some kind of thriller act will occur in this ‘room’ and will make the audience and characters ‘panic’. At the end of the scene the women mentions something about a house, suggesting that the room maybe located in there.

Analysis of ‘Se7en’

Camera Shot/Angle/Movement

The opening credits had camera shots such as, extreme close up when the camera zoomed in on the character’s finger and objects he used like the needle he used to saw the news paper. There was also a track scene when the camera focused mostly on the textbooks in the library. Most of the angles scene in the opening scene are close ups and extreme close ups. These angles are confusing because we don’t get to see much which could suggest the directors attempt to create suspense. On the image above the director used a high angle to show the hands of a corpse which is a technique used to show the view of the character who is in this scene. This is a high angle shot which take is from above to make the subject look less dominant. In the opening scene there are also a lot of close ups of disturbing images which is a technique used to make the environment seem unusual and dangerous.

Sound
Intense music which worked well to build the suspense in the opening scene and it went well with the visual which we didn’t get to see much so it made you nervous and made the opening scene unpredictable. There is mostly non diagetic sound in the opening scene which fits with the diagetic sounds of the movements and actions been made by the character which is the turning of the books pages. The director used this type of music so it can blend in with the events of the scene. You can notice the music just goes hand in hand with what you see in the scene. In the scene you can see a cut out which says “God” and the music says the same thing which makes the events of the scene seem like they follow the pace of the music because the music and the editing of scenes speed up gradually towards the end.

Editing

The speed of the opening scene was slowed down right at the beginning. The scenes where very unclear from the start and as the opening scene continued I noticed the scenes where much shorter because of the cuts probably made by the director to create the suspense feeling. In the opening scene there are a lot of words which are highlighted which can clearly be linked with religion, faith and belief such as “god”. They use these techniques to hint the themes which would be in this movie.

Mise en Scene
The scene is a fairly lit room with a lot of stationary lying around on a table. There are several images with pages being turned and other scenes of the same stationary I mentioned being used. In the scene you see images of corpses which lead to the audience to make their first judgements on what type of person this unidentified character is. This could be considered a hint to what type of genre this movie is what the plot of this story might be leading to.

Characters
The character in the opening scene does not get revealed, this could possibly be a technique to build suspense. You don’t really know the characters intentions you just see the characters doing daily tasks like reading books but the audience still has a suspicious feeling about the character. All we get to see is the character hands we don’t get to see his physical or facial appearances. The scene does not reveal the gender of this unknown character. The character seems like a very odd person because of all the pictures of the corpses he has which seems slightly twisted and sick. In the screen shot you can see the character using a razor blade, this is used to make the character seem odd and insane and this works well to build suspense and fear of the character among the audience. From this screen shot we can see this character we can see he is not very hygienic and this makes the character seem stranger.

Locations
The opening scene seems to be set in a library of some sort. On the other hand the library cold is located in a prison because from brief scenes you can tell the conditions of the location are poor. The lighting of this scenery is so dark and dull which creates an uneasy feeling in the audience. In the image on right you can see that the lighting of the location is pretty dark and you notice that it’s in the daytime but yet the location is still slightly dark. This is technique has been used to make sure that they don’t give away the location and want to keep the suspense feeling and want to keep the audience unsure about the location. This works because this forces the audience to watch the whole movie to know where this movie is set.

Narrative/Plot
An unidentified character is scanning through books and highlighting the key word in this movie in a book and he is also cutting out words out of newspapers such as the cut out which read “god” towards the end of the scene. There are lots of clues like this throughout this opening scene. The Music in the background continuously refer to god because it clearly says ‘Closer to god’ which hints that religion might be an important topic in this movie. From the opening scene you can sense this movie could be about a psychotic character which is used to make this movie feel like a thriller from the opening scene.

 Genre
From the opening scene there are a few hints and clues which suggest that this movie is a thriller/horror. There are hints such as the picture of the corpses and the dark and unclear scenes that creates the sense of fear in the audience. From the title in the opening scene you can sense that the genre of this movie is a thriller because of the text which is used for the title. This type of text is unclear and blurry which basically contrasts with the conventions of a thriller because in thrillers you don’t get to see much and everything is dark and unclear.

ANALYSIS- 'APOCOLYPTO'

The camera shots start of on the level of something crawling through the floor, zooming into the wilderness. This makes the audience feel like they are a creature slithering through this peaceful setting. At first, low angle is used as it is near the ground this is so the audience can see feet running past the camera which adds to the curiosity factor. The movement in the opening scene starts off slow and begins to build tension. In the next scene the audience may feel as if they are in the jungle and are part of the hunting scene. The camera begins to move fast on a dolly and a track as it runs along and behind the run-away animal. The shots were fast and they are close ups of key features such as faces of the tribal men, running feet and the pigs teeth. All the shots used created suspicion because we still haven’t been fully introduced to the characters.
At the beginning the sound starts with a low drum beating and the use of diegetic sound was introduced with the noise of animals such as Birds, monkeys and Flies. This adds to the creation of the scene and the visual build up and what the director wants the audience to feel, which is believed to make the audience feel a part of the scene and understand the concept of nature. When we see the feet run past for two seconds this instantly breaks the calming atmosphere, we then return to the tree rustling and the animal callings, the sound and camera makes the scene filled with suspense which grabs the attention of the audience. Then suddenly jumps out pig, shocking and terrifying the audience as it was so unexpected. The audience then feel the hunter’s desperation because the drumming becomes louder and faster. We also hear another sound, tribal ritual noises which adds to the culture of the scene; this could help the audience understand the genre through all these sounds.
The mise-en-scene creates a great opening to this film and the visual side of it is tremendous. The colours are based on green; the plants are wild and freely grown. The lighting is bright considering it is based at the bottom of the jungle; the setting is beautiful which adds to the calming atmosphere. When the camera zooms into the bushes before the drama occurs, a butterfly flies across the shot, which shows the final beauty of the scene before we are introduced to the films story which contrasts everything this jungle is beautiful, free and alive.
The characters that are introduced in the opening scene are ambiguous. In the scene the audience are only shown glimpses of the characters which were rather unsettling and there was hardly any time for the audience to focus on any of the shown characters. This is possibly because the opening scene was more about creating the settings and atmosphere than involving the characters. The audience are however able to gather visual information that the characters are hunters and they did so on bare footed and were native. They can establish this because the close up shots were able to catch the characters skin tone which is tanned and that they have cloth wrapped around them as their clothing and their long black hair. All the character features add up to resemble a native of a tribe. They seem out casted in a remote area this is indicated by the fact they are using knives to hunt a pig also you can realise that they know the jungle well from the several hunting traps they had set, signifying this is their home.
The narrative is difficult to understand, as all we can gather is a sense of what it could be from the quotation at the beginning of the film. ‘A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has been destroyed itself from within’- W Durrant.  The key words from the quote we collect an assumption of the narrative, plot and genre. Such as civilization shows a sense of community, where as conquered could symbolize battle, war or sadness. The same as destroyed we create in our minds a feeling of struggle. The themes throughout Apocolypto would be survival, desperation, peace and harmony towards the jungle.
The genre of Apocolypto is action, adventure and drama. You can see this by the fact the characters are have weapon, used to hunt the pig indicates action. The surrounding and setting of the scene shows the film will be adventurous because there is no limit. As the characters are seen tribal warriors, instantly the audience will acknowledge that there will be drama involved with rituals and tribal actions to portray this.

Jaws opening sequence analysis

The title sequence begins with a black background which shows the production company, the directors and producers of the film and the key characters within the film. This is probably to correspond with the uncertainty feeling of the audience. The audience are able to hear the sound of an ocean in the background but are still faced with a plain black screen. The title of the film ‘Jaws’ is revealed to the audience as suddenly appears over the ocean. The title sequence is appears quite simplistic and the audience I left with the sense of mystery.
At the beginning of the sequence, the music is very gentle and slow, representing a chilling mood. As the scene goes on, the music becomes slightly louder and up tempo which alarms the audience. It starts off when the camera is positioned within the sea and tension builds up due to the uncertainty of what is about to happen. The music is very soft to start with which sets the mood and tone, yet unexpectedly changes giving the scene more depth and exaggeration.
In the very first scene, the camera is a point of view shot in the position of the shark. Another angle is then given to the audience and they immediately identify the narrative of the film a story about sharks. The point of view shot also puts the audience in the mind of the shark and lets the viewers see what it is like from the shark’s perspective adding a distinctive twist to the opening sequence. The shark is swimming in and out of the weeds also gives the shark that sense of mystery and ultimately perceives the shark as a dangerous and evil character within the film.
The scene then changes and shows a group of teenagers having a party on a beach. The group of teenagers look happy and appear to be enjoying themselves. The atmosphere seems very relaxed and the people seem calm and cool. This is perhaps created by the mouth organ playing in the background which is almost soothing and puts the characters at ease.
Further into the scene a young girl and boy then run off from the group and go into the sea. A wide shot is used to show the female swimming alone in the open waters. The shot investigates how calm and quiet the sea is and highlights nobody but the girl in sight amongst the unknown ocean. The wide shot is also responsible for showing the audience the size of the ocean .In the background, there is diagetic sound of the water and general noise of swimming. This makes the scene seem more realistic and loneliness of the girl stands out more.
Whilst the girl is swimming, the music stops and there is complete silence at this point within the scene. This makes the audience concentrate carefully and focus on the girl. The lack of noise also gives the audience a sense of uncertainty as they are unaware of what may happen next. At that very moment the scene is full of suspense and tension as it is clear that something perhaps terrifying is about to occur. With the use of having no music during this scene adds to the drama and anticipation of the opening of the film.
The camera then switches between the top and bottom of the water to show both the sharks and girls point of view to allow the audience to capture the intensity of both characters. The camera starts off under the water to show the shark’s point of view and how it spots the female in its territory. The camera then switches to above the waters, showing the females perspective. This is an interesting use of camera work as it gives the audience the chance to view the scene in two completely different ways.

There is then a shot of the females legs kicking within the water and the camera slowly zooms closer to them. The camera shot is clearly in the position of the shark’s point of view and the audience become aware that the shark is moving closer to the woman. The use of the zoom camera movement also makes it clear that the shark is particularly aiming for the girl’s legs and begins its attack by the biting of her legs. The zooming of the camera additionally gives the scene more drama and suspense as the audience are finally introduced the narrative of the film and it is clear that the shark is about to attack.
After the shark attack, there is a sudden silence which is extremely abrupt. This immediately alerts the audience that the girl has been killed and also marks the end of the opening scene. This instantly provides shock value for the viewer.
At the end of the scene, the director introduces irony as all we can hear is the sound of the sea which is calm and relaxed as the audience are fully aware that the sea is far from calm and relaxed. The audience will fear the sea from then on as we become familiar with the shark attack and what is in store for the other characters in the rest of the film.
